ultra-luxe basements, checkered patterns, and more trends to watch

Pinterest isn't just the creative's virtual moodboard, it's also a veritable fortune teller when it comes to trends. In fact, the site reports that 8 out of 10 of its predictions for last year came true! Decor aficionados ought to take heed for this year's predictions, then. We round up some more of our favorites below. (Missed the first installment? Check it out here.)

Checkered patterns
"Check, please. Checkers are having their moment in all areas of people’s lives—from nails and rugs to funky flooring. As men upgrade their wardrobes, they’ll embrace the tiled pattern, too. Millennials and Boomers in particular are driving this checkered trend," reports Pinterest. Search terms related to the trend include "checkerboard pattern," up 160 percent; "checkered rug," and "checkered tile floor."

Ultra-luxurious "forgotten" spaces
Once-forgotten spaces—think musty basements, afterthought laundry rooms, and even functional-but-not-designed children's rooms—are up for a reboot. "In 2022, people will give luxurious makeovers to their home’s nooks and crannies. For Millennials and Gen X, forgotten spaces will become conversation starters when you have guests over," predicts Pinterest. Rising in popularity in particular are luxe laundry rooms, basements, game rooms, garages, and kids bedrooms.
"Anyone can make the main bedroom look glamorous. But I’m an expert at making the 'forgotten' rooms like basements and laundry rooms look stylish. It’s all about organization. And plants. Lots of plants," designer Nicole Rosenberg of Liberty Interiors tells Pinterest.

Goth-themed decor
"Goth will make its way into the mainstream this year across all age groups—just not in the ways you might expect," predicts Pinterest, noting that goth kitchen decor is set for a rise in popularity, and that home brands in particular might heed the trend by showcasing "romantic, ornamental dark elements from table settings to kitchen appliances," as well as black house exteriors.
