2 trim colors you need to know—and when to use them

If you're puzzled as to how to approach painting trim, designer Katie Buck, of Washington, D.C., based 1225 Designs, has some insider wisdom. Your trim paint choice should be informed by your aesthetic. Are you more traditional, or more contemporary?

Katie shares her take with us. "I’m pretty traditional in my approach to color schemes for moldings and trim," she explains. "I have found that most of the spaces I design call for wall and trim schemes that bind the elements together—but do not set the pace."

Katie's recommendations for trim paint color vary depending on the mood of your home. "I gravitate towards using a bright white on trim in more contemporary spaces, and a soft white for trim in more traditional spaces," she explains. "In addition to the walls and trim, I evaluate the ceiling and incorporate the painting into that plane as well. I really like to either paint a ceiling a white semi-gloss—or slightly tint a white ceiling paint with the wall color."

So, which paint colors does Katie rely on? In addition to Sheer by C2, the designer shares, "For trim and moldings, I most often specify Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace, a bright white, or White Dove, a soft white."
